Excerpt from Jake Law Texas Ranger – The Phantom Warriors
With the instructions given the men rode out; as Jake worked his way slowly along the draw and the wagon drew near, it became obvious that there were several bodies lying scattered on the icy ground. It was then Jake knew his hunch was right, the Comanche had been here and they had shown no more mercy on these men than they had the seven members of the Stone family.
At the wagon Jake stepped down from the saddle into the blood covered snow, he knew that such expeditions between the two forts were made with six men, a driver, a man riding shotgun, and four mounted escorts. Even if the wagon was carrying nothing more than just a few supplies it always moved along this trail with the same number of soldiers.
Tillie Payne walked from around the corner of the wagon, "How many," Jake asked.
"Five," the sergeant answered.
"Five," Jake echoed. He quickly let his eyes moved over the snowy terrain in all directions, "Maybe one got away. Tillie you and the men spread out and see if you can find ‘im. I’m a-thinking there’s another one here some place."
Jake’s words were still hanging in the cold air when Pete Brown called out, "Cap, here’s another one."
Tillie looked at the Captain and said, "Six."
Jake gave his head a slow, aggravated shake, "Gather ‘em up," he said to Tillie, "and load ‘em in the wagon," then he called out, "Jed Whitehead."
